If the Allison in question is electronically controlled, there is a variable list of parameters that have to be satisfied before the computer will engage the PTO. In my experience an mt654 or even hd750 have the pto gear always spinning, however I've heard of older versions that needed to be in gear with your foot on the brake. Generally they use a clutch type pto on allisons and it uses trans fluid pressure to engage the clutch (I think that's call a hot start pto ). What model of truck, engine, transmission are you running? On this last load of manure I left it in reverse and it went a lot better. ![]() This one for sure has to be in drive first. Some you have to put in REVERSE to get the transmission to stop turning and sometimes back up just a tick to get it to fully engage. Sometimes it needs to be creeped forward a bit to help it engage. Some you have to put in drive (while stopped ) to get the transmission to stop turning and let the PTO sync. Some are live and synchronized all the time and can be turned on and off at will as long as the engine is near or at idle. I can get by with how it’s wirking but come harvest time my help won’t be able to get this to raise. Sometimes it works and sometimes it won’t. I know it needs to be in drive to engage the pto, then I can get it to raise if I throw it in neutral and engage the pump about the same time. Have a chop truck with a Allison transmission and can’t quite figure how to engage the pto.
